Finding a rental car company that rents cargo vans takes a bit of work. Of the well-known, name-brand car rental companies, only Budget Truck Rental, Hertz and Enterprise offer cargo vans in Chicago.

Enterprise offers the GM Express, Ford Econoline or similar cargo vans from five Chicago offices for an estimated $66.63 per day including fees and taxes with unlimited mileage as long as the van remains in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.

If traveling outside those states, mileage is charged at 200 free miles per day and $.25 for each additional mile.

Enterprise’s cargo vans have a 3,000 to 3,500 lb. payload, ¾ ton extended length, gas engines and are air conditioned.

Hertz offers Ford Econoline cargo vans for $69.49 per day from 15 Chicago offices, including Midway Airport, and their offices in Niles, Evanston and in Oak Park. Book several months in advance, as rental vans seem to be popular or under-represented in the Hertz fleet.

Thrifty and Avis don’t have cargo vans in their fleets, but they do have passenger vans. Likewise, the car sharing companies, Zipcar and I-Go, don’t offer cargo vans.

ACE Rent a Car rents the Ford Cargo E150 for an estimated $56.26 per day, including taxes and surcharges, from their office at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. The E150 features automatic transmission and air conditioning.

You can reserve a cargo van through their Budget’s Truck Rental Web site, where a cargo van rents for $19.99 per day, plus $.99 per mile.

Want to try an independent? In Chicago, there’s Elite Truck Rental, which rents Ford Econolines and offers a coupon for 10 percent off any daily rental at their Web site.

Or try ChicagoLand Truck Rental, which rents vans and trucks from its office on Montrose Avenue at Pulaski.
